Chapter 4

Nyomi

I thought I’d be a prisoner when I was brought to Unidad Castle less than two weeks ago, and I was absolutely right. I’ve been followed around like a dog on a leash by Bastian, barely able to escape into my room for sleep without his eyes on me. I don’t know what his role is, but it feels a lot like he has gone from castle guard to prison warden, and he won’t give me any damn answers.

The Kingdom Trials have merely been like school thus far, though I have never been to a real school. Each day consists of learning the history of the six kingdoms and doing physical training at the arena with the mages. I haven’t made any friends with the other initiates, but I guess that’s for the best considering we’re opponents.

I sit down at a long table in the dining hall, the last one to eat like usual. I can’t seem to catch up with the others, and I’m probably pissing Bastian off with my slow movements.

“Would you like to feed me that chicken leg, Bastian? Might as well make yourself useful.” I glare at him from across the dinner table.

Bastian smiles and shakes his head. “Nah, I’ll let you feed yourself.”

I scoff and roll my eyes. At least he’s kind to me, nothing like the prison guards from two years ago. I sink my teeth into the thick meat of the chicken leg and hold back a moan. The food here is amazing, and I don’t know how I’ll ever go back to living off the land after this.

Clio slides onto the bench seat beside me, snagging a bread roll from my plate. “Hey, Ny. How was training today?”

I smile at my best friend in this whole place and talk with my mouth full of food. “It was good. Your brother acts like I don’t exist though.”

The other initiates and I have been training in the afternoons together after the morning history lessons that Caz and I have with Everaux. Of course, together isn’t the right word. All of the initiates ignore me while they show off their incredible fighting skills and supernatural abilities.

Caz ignores me too, always running out of the library as soon as Everaux dismisses us, and choosing to go through drills across the arena instead of beside me. I have tried not to let his attitude get to me, but it still hurts in ways that I can’t explain.

Clio nudges my arm with her pink lips tilted downward in a frown. “I’m sorry about him, Ny. He has never been great with people. Don’t take it personally.”

I shake my head and feign boredom. “I don’t really care. He’s technically my rival anyway.”

Bastian chortles from his seat and leans back with his thick arms crossed. “Sure, you don’t care. I know when you’re lying by now, Nyomi.”

“Well, of course you know when I’m lying. You’re my constant stalker, never giving me space to breathe. You likely know my sleeping
